What is Tourette's Syndrome?
Tourette’s syndrome is a neurological disorder characterized by repetitive tics uncontrollable movements (shoulder shrugs, obscene gestures and head jerks) and vocal sounds (throat clearing, grunting, sniffing, repeating words and profanity). Tics involving movement usually begin before vocal tics.
Symptoms of Tourette's Syndrome
Tourette’s syndrome is a chronic condition with symptoms first being noticed between 2 to 12 years of age, getting worse in the early teens and improving later in life. Tics may be mild or severe. Before a tic, you will usually experience the premonitory urge, an uncomfortable feeling, such as a tingle, tension or itch, which is relieved by the act of the tic. Tics can sometimes be consciously suppressed to minimize its consequences, but this only builds tension until it is expressed.
Causes of Tourette's Syndrome
The cause of Tourette’s syndrome is not exactly known, but it is thought to be due to genetics, abnormalities in certain parts of the brain, or abnormal communication between nerve cells. The syndrome may be associated with disorders such as attention deficit disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and depression.
Diagnosis of Tourette's Syndrome
Tourette’s syndrome is primarily diagnosed by the history of symptoms and their onset. Tics must be present for at least a year for the diagnosis to be confirmed. Various tests may be ordered by your doctor to rule out other conditions.
Treatment for Tourette's Syndrome
Symptoms of Tourette’s syndrome can usually be tolerated, but if severe and interfering with activities of daily living, your doctor may prescribe medication including anti-psychotic drugs. Botox injection may be administered into the affected muscle to relieve a tic. Psychotherapy and behavioral therapy may also be recommended to reduce tics and help with the associated conditions.
